You Were Bigger & Brighter & Whiter Than Snow

Don't click through and gasp at the prices on these items I picked! I chose for the prettiness of them and ignored the prices..

Fall is my favorite season, hands down. I love the cosy fashion, the smell of new notebooks (still!), spice scented candles and pumpkin flavored lattes. It's a perfect time to break out all the wonderfully sad and pretty playlists for your final walks before it's too cold, (my favorite, if you can't tell, is The Cure's "Disintegration.") I think one of the reasons I love this time of year is that it seems so fleeting, as dramatic as that sounds. Summer is so hot hot hot and when things finally settle down for some crisp weather, it starts to freeze overnight. You gotta take advantage of it while you can! (Also, to be fair, my birthday just so happens to be in fall. Hmm...) Anyway! To prepare, I've come up with a list of My Autumn Essentials.

Just because the temperature drops doesn't mean you have to pack away your summer dresses. Cable-knit socks, ribbed fingerless gloves, bulky scarves - throw them over that sundress! Do you really want to wear jeans and only jeans straight through until May? No. My favorite: pairing up leggings with knee-high socks. Double warm, double cute! My biggest weaknesses are wearing layers and clashing patterns.

My three favorite pairs for the season? My all-over flower print Docs, my cherry decorated rain galoshes, and my sparkly purple, but sadly tattered, combat boots.

As I type this, I'm burning my new TRI-SCENTED candle from target. That's right. Pumpkin spice, caramel pumpkin, and cinnamon sticks. I also keep a healthy supply of incense, too, for cosy movie nights or to relax and warm up when I get home from work.

Pumpkin Spice Candle

How romantic...
  • The Cure - "Plainsong"
  • Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Spellbound"
  • Sisters of Mercy - "Walk Away"
  • Mumford and Sons - "The Cave"
  • Against Me! - "Wagon Wheel (cover)"
  • VNV Nation - "Beloved"
  • AFI - "Synthethesia"
  • Regina Spektor - "Pound of Flesh"
  • The whole Lost in Translation soundtrack
  • Bloc Party - "This Modern Love"
  • The Smiths - "Ring Around the Fountain
  • Interpol - "Roland"
  • Jimmy Eat World - "Lucky Denver Mint"
  • Placebo - "Running Up That Hill (cover)"
  • Le Tigre - "Eau d'Bedroom Dancing"
  • Murder by Death - "Intergalactic Menopause"
  • Neko Case - "Deep Red Bells"
  • New Order - "Ceremony"

Of course. I'm admittedly a coffee girl, but tea and the changing of the season really does it for me. "Hot Cinnamon Spice" from Caribou is wonderful, and so is Tazo's "Focus," which is a black tea with cocoa peel and orange essence. It's actually the yummiest ever. I just bought Vanilla Caramel Truffle, I think Archer Farms brand, and I'm still trying to figure out if I like it or if I'm bored by it. Has anyone else tried it?

I have gotten the sweetest stuff at Target's dollar section during October. Halloween is my second favorite holiday and I wish all year round could be silly skulls, dancing skeletons, pumpkin jewelry, and vampire bat home decor. Stock up now! So says the hot pink, glittery skull sitting on my desk at work. Also? HALLOWEEN SONGS. Best ever. Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party" - I mean, come on. Watch this space for some sweet Halloween playlists in a few months.

For your clothes, jewelry, nail polish .. dark mustard yellows, rusty orange, deep amethyst, near-black ruby red. Are these even on the "warm" section of the color chart? I honestly don't think so, but I don't care, they make me feel warm. Hmmm, COBALT GREY. I love you, charcoal. Everything charcoal grey. Which I really know isn't technically a "warm" color. Whatever! Gun metal.

Faun decor | Victoria's Secret hoodies | Halloween TV episodes | New down comforters | Matryoshka doll jewelry | Brown lip gloss | Hot Chai tea in the morning | Curled pigtails | Dark red dresses with bright white stockings | Checking out the back to school sales at office supply stores | Bags full of new yarn (wool and sock weight, please!) | Fireplaces | Hot apple cider! | Kitty cuddles in bed | Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts

And, lastly ...

Duh! Better to get a head start on your dream list for the NEXT season. It's always fun to look ahead, right?

So, what are your favorite parts of fall? What do you absolutely NEED during the season or what are you totally looking forward to?

  1. I can't start thinking about fall until it's actually here because it's too sad. It's 99 degrees in El Paso today, if I start thinking about sweaters and boots, I will cry.

  2. I've been lusting over that mustard yellow sweater for a couple weeks now! & giiirl that DRESS. Do want.

I love this list. :3 We don't have fall the same way in California that you do there, but I still love it. <3
