Outfits That'll Make You Say Like, What?: How to Dress like Adventure Time

As I'm sure you know, Adventure Time is one of my favorite shows lately. I had heard about it long before I ever watched it. I have to admit to you, I was a little wary before I tuned in. I didn't like Spongebob (Eep!) and didn't really get into any of the other Cartoon Network shows that most people talked about, like Flapjack or the Imaginary Friends one. So, when I first started seeing Adventure Time around online, in stores, and on TV, I wasn't rushing to go turn the TV on. UNFORTUNATELY, that was a mistake and I've been playing catch-up ever since! The show is so silly, and clearly for kids, but it has so many elements in it that older kids (And adults. Am I an adult? Eh!) can definitely appreciate. The art is so full of details, the stories are thought through, and it is nonsense, but it kind of makes sense? Mark says one of the reasons that he loves it is because watching it is like playing a really awesome video game. I love the characters, the design, the jokes, how sometimes it is scary and weird, but that's okay, because kids should see it! It's not vulgar, but it's not sugar-coated to protect kids either.

So, I really wanted to make a fun post about the show, but I didn't want to do a plain review, or collection of funny pictures or videos. But, what? I got to thinking: I really wanted to be Finn for Halloween, but I couldn't get a hat in time! What is better than that? Creating outfits inspired by the characters! I've only done five so far, but I had a lot of fun. I hope you like them, too. I did a mix of how to dress LIKE them and how to dress as if they were normal people in the normal world. This isn't cosplay, but fashion-inspiration. I mean, Lumpy Space Princess might be hard to dress as, but I had fun figuring out what she would wear if she was a person.

FINN was pretty easy, as he is a human and wears fairly normal clothes. I was excited to dress as him for Halloween because it would be comfortable. Finn cannot wear an outfit that will hinder his adventuring abilities, but that doesn't mean you can't be cute while dressing up a la Finn. I picked some shorts with a really sweet bow belt and an Adidas hoodie. Throw in some chucks, a green backpack, and a furry white eared hat, and you are set! Extra points if you have luscious, goldenrod hair hiding under that hat, hidden to the world until you need to prove a point to an ugly witch. Finn's hair reveal is one of my favorite moments from the show. Algebraic! Details here.

JAKE the dog took a little more imagination. I saw that dress though and thought it was perfect! Now, I don't necessarily think that that hat really goes with the outfit, BUT I thought it was cute and pulled it all together. Yellow wayfarers are pretty bad ass, and who can resist Betsey Johnson anything? Jake is pretty sophisticated for being a silly little dog, so the sun dress and accessories fit perfectly, but those gorgeous boots also make it possible to run around and play a little. Details here.

MARCELINE, the vampire queen, is pretty easy to love. She's fashionable, has an amazing voice, seems like a lot of fun (although a little pushy), and can rock a half-shaved head like no one I know. Her outfit, like Finn's, was simple to recreate, because why mess with what is already awesome? Vampires have to be comfortable, and I think she'd like a glitter lips necklace. My favorite Marceline line? "I'm not mean, I'm a thousand years old, and I just lost track of my moral code." Marceline so shops at Urban Outfitters. Details here.

PRINCESS BUBBLEGUM. This is amazing. I want to look like what she looks like every single day. PB makes me feel awful every time I see her because I've been too busy to re-pink my hair. SORRY, Princess Bubblegum. She's kind of a brat in the show, but she's frickin' cute, so whatever. I am not sure if you could get away with wearing a crown in your PB-esque outfit, but a gold headband would do the trick and would look oh-so-cute against your cotton candy colored hair. Also, those shoes are driving me bonkers. Details here.

LUMPY SPACE PRINCESS. Last, but not least. LSP has grown on me the most out of all the characters; at first I could care less, but now I'm in love. My favorite is to make Mark talk like her for me. "Oh, my glob!" Surprisingly, this outfit turned out to be my favorite. She's got style, I admit it! I wanted to make her outfit, uh, "lumpy" by picking pieces that had different shapes and could be flowy. Remember how LSP has hair? Weird. Also, I really love the idea of those ankle socks with the purple heels. I would pick some sheer, nude nylons to go with this. Details here.

So, what do you think? Let me know in the comments if you find anything else that you think the group would wear! I'm not sure who else I could do. Ice King? Hee! Starchy! Who is your favorite Adventure Time character? I can't decide. Have a great day~
