What I Wore: Leather and Pink

Yesterday was my mom's birthday and I'll take any excuse to dress up. (Don't worry about the fact that we all went out to eat for pizza and darts!) It was snowing when we drove in (kind of), so I wore my mom's vintage leather jacket from when she was in her 20s. I decidedly am not wearing a winter coat any more until fall.

Dress: Do & Be
Jacket: Vintage
 Scarf: Pashmina
 Cardigan: from Heartbreaker
 Tights & Socks: Target
 Boots: Soda

These boots are my favorite. Total Doc ripoffs, but they were less than $30 and just as cute. My favorite fashion choice is mixing cute dresses and sweet outfits with my black boots. I know 90s are back, and that is something I am definitely signing off on. Perfect! I love them so much this is my second pair.

QUICK ANNOUNCEMENT: I will be gone for the next few weeks, so my blog will mostly likely not have any new posts until May. Follow me on Twitter for updates on my trip! Bye~

Review: Red Carpet Manicure Gel Polish Pro Kit

If there is one thing that I am not, it's a nail artist. I can do simple things that include strips of tape and polka dots (sometimes). The most advanced nail design I've done is the drippy nail, which is just kind of a glorified polka dot, to be honest with you.

I do love having pretty nails, though. I had a gel manicure done for my wedding and I absolutely 100% loved it. It wasn't like fake acrylics - just a pretty and sturdy nail polish that lasted a few weeks. In that time, too, my nails grew and didn't chip or break.

My lovely sisters-in-law gifted me with the Red Carpet Manicure brand at-home gel polish kit, which comes with all the materials you need, as well as a red color polish and your own mini-LED lamp. After my wedding nails were off, I decided to give it a whirl. I also picked up a pink color, along with a gold glitter and nude.

It was awesome! Since I tried it for the first time in January, I think I've used it at least 4 or 5 times for my fingernails and once on my toes. It's easy to use (the instructions are very clear) and only takes about 45-60 minutes total, depending on how many times you need to refer to the instructions and how many coats of the color gel polish you apply.

TIPS

  • Make sure you do push your cuticle back as far as possible before you apply any of the base or polish. If the polish is on your skin at all once you cure it under the LED, it'll be way more likely to peel off.
  • When the instructions say a thin layer, they really do mean a thin layer. I dip the brush in the bottle before I paint each nail and then wipe pretty much everything off before I apply it. If you put too much on, your nails will be bumpy and thick and really weird looking from the side. Learn from my mistakes.
  • I haven't perfected this yet, but try to have all of your layers of gel polish go over the edge of your nail a little. That'll protect the tips of your manicure, otherwise it might chip a little easier.
  • After everything is all done, I take a cotton wipe, load it up with the "Purify" solution that was included, and go to town on the nails. And then I wash them immediately in cold water. I don't know if that does anything, but it helps to get all the stickiness and oily feeling off your nails.

All in all, I'm super happy with the results I get from the polish. Any aspect that isn't that ideal (peels off of my cuticles, bumpy texture, etc) is mostly just from me learning how to use the product. I've gotten way better at evenly applying the gel polish and being careful to keep it off of my skin.

Last night when I gave myself a manicure, I decided to use another brand of gel polish that I picked up at Walgreens. The brand was Sensationail and the color was what got me: Heirloom Lilac. When I applied it, I immediately liked it more than the colors of RCM that I have. It only took two coats to get a nice opaque cover, whereas the brand that goes with the kit I have takes almost four coats until you can't see your nail underneath. The only issue is that the next day when I did the dishes, a few of the nails on the left hand got weird blue streaks. I don't know if that has to do with the polish not matching the actual RCM brand gel or not, it's just kind of a bummer. See below:

It isn't the biggest deal in the world, just thought it was worth mentioning. I haven't had the streaks like this using the Red Carpet Manicure color gel polish, but this is also the first time using the Sensationail brand. I would definitely try it again since I love the color and finish so much. Next time I'll be even more careful of applying the gel and will make sure I get the polish over the edge of the nail to create a seal, as well.

Do you have a gel polish kit at home? What brand do you have and what polish do you use? I love it! Spending a little under an hour to do my nails is not too bad when you take into account how long the polish will last, and that you have absolutely zero drying time. (I think that's my favorite part!)

You can find the Red Carpet Manicure Gel Pro Kit at Target or Sephora, as well as Amazon. Well worth it!

6 Awesome Game of Thrones Collectibles

Mark and I are now completely caught up with Game of Thrones. And now I'm totally obsessed; it's all I think about and all I want to think about. Sooo - now that I don't have any more episodes to binge watch until the newest one on Sunday, I spend my time scouring the internet for cute toys and other collectables. Here are some of the items that have found their way onto my GoT wishlist.

I'm a huge fan of POP Funko figures of anyyything, but this Ghost one? It's something I need like yesterday.
Found at BarnesAndNoble.com

Something that I don't need more of is coffee mugs, but I really really think it'd be a good idea to have this Winter is Coming cup for my morning coffee. I mean, I live in MN, this is our state motto, right?
Found at HotTopic.com

Did you know that the dire wolves are the cutest things in the entire world? Did you know that Sansa loved her dire wolf so much that she adopted her IN REAL LIFE?! Can you blame her? I want this hoodie. And also a dire wolf.
Found at Etsy.com

While I would mostly like a phone cover that says Valar Morghulis, this Westeros map one is pretty cool, too.
Found at HBO.com

This print of Winterfell is gorgeous!

I love all of Dany's jewelry in the show, but I don't think I could pull off a huge dragon claw in day-to-day life. This mini version is perfect, though! I love Khaleesi.

Things I Love

I went through a terrarium-phase at some point this last year. This picture from One Sheepish Girl is kind of bringing it back.

One of my new favorite blogs is Being Erica - her double polka dot outfit is adorable!

Marinke from a creative being always has the best crochet patterns. Look at these flowers from her Dancing Hearts Wrap. I bought the pattern!

Kitties! And cute thread! And a pretty simple looking DIY! I love everything about this.

This ice cream print is soooo sweet. (Ha!)

This scallop bag from ASOS is seriously the best. It's out of stock, though. Bummer! Still good eye-candy.
